Introducing Michigan Garden Design | Your Awesome Native Plant Specialists!

Welcome to the Michigan Garden Design Blog!

If you’ve ever wondered how to create a more natural, low-maintenance garden in Michigan, you’re not alone.

There’s something about stepping outside in Michigan that feels grounding. Peaceful. Alive.

Maybe it’s the movement of prairie grasses along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The quiet beauty of woodland trails after spring rain. Or the first signs of life emerging after a long Michigan winter.

This state has a way of reconnecting us to something deeper.

Welcome. I’m Barbara Fleury, and Michigan Garden Design was created from a lifelong love of gardening, a deep connection to Michigan’s natural ecosystems, and a desire to help others create outdoor spaces that feel just as peaceful, meaningful, and alive.

This is a space for native gardening inspiration, pollinator-friendly landscaping ideas, bird and wildlife habitat gardening, seasonal Michigan gardening guidance, and sustainable landscape design that works with nature instead of against it.

🌱 Where It All Began

My journey with gardening started long before I ever thought about garden design.

As a child, I learned how to propagate and grow fruits and vegetables alongside my mom. There’s something unforgettable about watching something grow from almost nothing — and even more powerful is tasting it.

Fresh tomatoes, strawberries, and garden-grown meals created a connection to the earth that stayed with me.

Over time, that early experience became something much deeper.

In 1999, I became a certified Master Gardener through Michigan State University Extension, and over the past 30 years, I’ve designed and cultivated gardens across 11 different homes while also helping friends and fellow gardeners bring their outdoor spaces to life.

One of the most meaningful parts of that journey has been teaching children how to grow their own food and gardens — then watching them bring that knowledge home to their families.

That full-circle experience of learning, growing, and sharing is something I carry with me in everything I do.

🌿 Why Native Michigan Garden Plants Thrive

The more time I’ve spent gardening, the more I’ve come to understand something simple but powerful:

When we plant with nature, everything becomes easier.

Because native Michigan plants evolved within our climate, rainfall patterns, soil conditions, and ecosystems, they are naturally adapted to thrive here.

That often means:

  • Less watering
  • Lower maintenance
  • Fewer chemicals
  • Healthier soil
  • Greater resilience over time

Native plants also provide essential habitat and food sources for pollinators, birds, butterflies, beneficial insects, and even amphibians like frogs and toads.

Beautiful native species like Wild Columbine, Butterfly Weed, Wild Bergamot, Purple Coneflower, Little Bluestem, Joe Pye Weed, Cardinal Flower, and Prairie Dropseed prove that sustainable gardens can also feel layered, vibrant, and deeply beautiful.

Many traditional landscapes are stunning and absolutely have their place. But many homeowners simply don’t realize there’s another option — one that often feels more connected to Michigan’s natural rhythms and requires far less long-term maintenance.

You can explore additional native plant resources through the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Native Plant Database.

🐝 Creating Pollinator, Bird, and Wildlife Habitats in Michigan Gardens

A healthy garden supports far more than plants.

When thoughtfully designed, even small Michigan landscapes can become thriving ecosystems that support:

  • Bees and butterflies
  • Hummingbirds and songbirds
  • Beneficial insects
  • Frogs and amphibians
  • Local wildlife

Creating wildlife habitats in Michigan gardens often includes layered plantings, native flowering species, seed-producing grasses, host plants for butterflies, and shallow water sources that support birds and pollinators throughout the seasons.

Organizations like the Xerces Society for Pollinator Conservation and the National Audubon Society Native Plants Database offer incredible resources for gardeners wanting to support biodiversity at home.

🌱 When Is the Best Time to Start Gardening in Michigan?

One of the most common questions Michigan gardeners ask is:

“When is it finally safe to plant?”

In Michigan, early spring and early fall are often ideal times to plant native perennials, shrubs, and trees.

Cooler temperatures and seasonal rainfall help plants establish stronger root systems before summer heat arrives.

Because Michigan spans multiple growing zones and microclimates — especially near the Great Lakes — planting times can vary significantly depending on where you live.

You can monitor local planting conditions and frost timing through the Old Farmer’s Almanac Michigan Frost Dates Guide.

One of the beautiful things about gardening in Michigan is that it teaches patience.

Gardens are rarely built all at once.

They evolve slowly, season by season.

🌸 What I Believe a Garden Should Feel Like

A garden should be more than something you maintain.

It should be something you experience.

When I design a space, my intention is always the same:

  • To create peace
  • To foster connection with the natural world
  • To support birds, pollinators, and wildlife
  • To create something both beautiful and meaningful
  • To help homeowners feel grounded and inspired outdoors

Because when your garden begins working with nature instead of constantly fighting against it, everything changes.

🌿 Who Michigan Garden Design Is For

If you’ve ever thought:

You’re in exactly the right place.
